To begin with, a little history. Overseas automakers began to introduce VIN codes on cars and spare parts back in the mid-fifties. Interestingly, in those days, the combination of numbers and letters did not have a single standard and differed depending on the manufacturer. In the early eighties, the National Association for Traffic Safety introduced general requirements and ordered vehicle identification numbers, which denote a number of mandatory information.
The VIN number is the most important combination of symbols that complies with the ISO (International Standard Organization, International Organization for Standardization) recommendations on the vehicle manufacturer, release date, technical equipment, configuration and other nuances.
In fact, this code is a kind of DNA of the car. VIN had to be standardized to consist of 17 symbols, but only of the Arabic numerals and capital letters of the Latin alphabet: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0 and A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z, except I,O,Q.
